The BS year is always approximately 56 years and 8½ months ahead of the AD year. So the year 2025 AD corresponds to BS year 2082 (from mid-April 2025). The exact offset shifts slightly across months because the Nepali new year (Naya Barsa) falls in mid-April — not January 1.
The Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar is the official civil calendar of Nepal, used for all government, legal, and financial purposes — including IRD tax filings, court dates, land registry, and official contracts. It is a Hindu solar calendar attributed to the reign of King Vikramaditya, with its epoch set at 57 BC.
The BS calendar has 12 months: Baisakh, Jestha, Ashadh, Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashwin, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun, and Chaitra. Unlike the Gregorian calendar where month lengths are fixed, BS months vary between 29 and 32 days each year, determined annually by the Government of Nepal's Department of Printing.
The Gregorian (AD) calendar is a purely solar calendar with fixed month lengths. Bikram Sambat is a solar-sidereal calendar whose month boundaries are set by the sun's transit through the zodiac signs, resulting in variable month lengths. The total days in a BS year range from 354 to 365, meaning some BS years are shorter than a Gregorian year and some are longer.
