How to Convert AD to BS and BS to AD (Nepal)

Converting AD to BS (Gregorian to Bikram Sambat)

Select the AD → BS tab in the converter above, then type your Gregorian date in any format —2025-05-24, 24/05/2025, or May 24 2025 all work. The converter returns the exact Bikram Sambat date, weekday, and all common output formats you can copy with one click.

As a rough manual estimate: subtract 56 years and 8½ months from the AD year. However, because BS months vary between 29 and 32 days, this estimate can be off by one day — always use the calculator for official documents, IRD filings, or legal deadlines.

Converting BS to AD (Bikram Sambat to Gregorian)

Select the BS → AD tab, then enter your BS date as 2082-01-15 or 15/01/2082. As a rough manual estimate: add 56 years and 8½ months to the BS year. Again, the calculator gives the exact answer — critical when converting IRD tax deadlines or court dates that reference specific BS month-end dates.

Nepal fiscal year tip: FY 2082/83 BS runs from1 Shrawan 2082 (17 July 2025 AD) to 31 Ashadh 2083 (15 July 2026 AD). Use the batch converter above to convert all your TDS deadline dates at once. See also: TDS deadline guide for FY 2082/83 →

What is the difference between the AD and BS year numbers?

The BS year is always approximately 56 years and 8½ months ahead of the AD year. So the year 2025 AD corresponds to BS year 2082 (from mid-April 2025). The exact offset shifts slightly across months because the Nepali new year (Naya Barsa) falls in mid-April — not January 1.

About the Bikram Sambat (BS) Calendar

The Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar is the official civil calendar of Nepal, used for all government, legal, and financial purposes — including IRD tax filings, court dates, land registry, and official contracts. It is a Hindu solar calendar attributed to the reign of King Vikramaditya, with its epoch set at 57 BC.

How many months are in the Nepali calendar?

The BS calendar has 12 months: Baisakh, Jestha, Ashadh, Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashwin, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun, and Chaitra. Unlike the Gregorian calendar where month lengths are fixed, BS months vary between 29 and 32 days each year, determined annually by the Government of Nepal's Department of Printing.

How is Bikram Sambat different from the Gregorian calendar?

The Gregorian (AD) calendar is a purely solar calendar with fixed month lengths. Bikram Sambat is a solar-sidereal calendar whose month boundaries are set by the sun's transit through the zodiac signs, resulting in variable month lengths. The total days in a BS year range from 354 to 365, meaning some BS years are shorter than a Gregorian year and some are longer.

Quick conversion rule: To convert a BS year to an approximate AD year, subtract 57 (e.g., 2082 − 57 = 2025). To convert AD to approximate BS, add 57. This gives the correct year for dates after mid-April. Before mid-April (i.e., before Baisakh 1), add 56 instead.
